Twenty-two people were in need of shelter after the roof of an Edgewater neighborhood apartment building collapsed Friday evening.
Firefighters evacuated 46 apartments after the partial collapse about 4 p.m. in the 5900 block of North Kenmore, according to Chicago Fire Media Affairs.
Initial findings suggest the collapse, near the back of the building, was caused by work that was underway on the roof, the fire department said.
No injuries were reported, but the fire department initially evacuated 60 people, many who were later allowed to return to their apartments.
In the end, 22 people were barred from returning home and sought shelter with the Salvation Army, the fire department said.
