A 14-year-old girl who was shot in the leg Friday afternoon was the apparent unintended victim of gun violence.

The girl was outside in the 7900 block of South Vernon Avenue about 4:55 p.m. when two groups of nearby males opened fire on each other, police said.

One of the bullets struck the girl in the leg, police said.

She was taken in good condition to University of Chicago Comer Children’s Hospital, police said.

No one was in custody early Saturday as Area South detectives are investigated.
