Police were searching for a man who beat and sexually assaulted a woman he dragged away from a West Town neighborhood bus stop about 5 a.m. Monday.

The woman was at a bus stop enclosure in the 1000 block of North Western when the suspect attacked her, according to a community alert issued by Area Central detectives.

He then dragged her to a nearby gangway where he beat and sexually assaulted her, the alert said.

Authorities describe the suspect as a black man between 19 and 26 years old, between 5-foot-9 and 5-foot-10 and weighing 160 to 180 pounds, the alert said.

He has a dark brown complexion and is clean-shaven, the alert said. He was wearing diamond stud earrings in both ears, along with a green T-shirt, green shorts, black shoes and a black do-rag.

Police are urging residents to walk in pairs or groups and report any suspicious activity.

Anyone with information on the attack should call detectives at (312) 747-8380.
