A Metra worker was struck and killed by a Metra train Friday afternoon in the South Side Kenwood neighborhood.
Crew member Luis Mercado, 36, was performing track work near 47th Street when a train fatally struck him about 1:30 p.m., said Carolyn Tucker, director of external affairs for Metra.
Mercado was hit by train No. 223, which departed Millennium Station at 1:15 p.m. and was scheduled to arrive in Blue Island at 2:07, Tucker said.
Mercado was a trackman who had worked for Metra since 2001.
