Chicago Police fatally shot a teen who allegedly pointed a gun at officers Thursday afternoon in the South Side Washington Park neighborhood, police said.
Christian Green, 17, was shot about 1:10 p.m. Thursday in the 5600 block of South State Street after he allegedly pointed a gun at officers, authorities said.
Wentworth District tactical officers on patrol saw a male “acting suspiciously” near the 5800 block of South Michigan Avenue and went to interview him about 1:10 p.m., according to a police statement. Pat Camden, a Fraternal Order of Police spokesman, noted the man was standing near a schoolyard.
The male ran away while holding a gun at his side and the officers gave chase through vacant lots, police said. Officers broadcast his description over a police radio and told fellow officers he had a gun in his waistband, Camden said.
The officers saw the teen drop the gun from his waistband in the 5700 block of South State Street then pick it up and continue running, police said. The male picked the gun up from the ground and ran with it in his hand for about another half-block until another tactical team joined the pursuit, Camden said.
Pursuing officers ordered the teen to drop the weapon, but he instead pointed the gun at officers, police said. The officers then fatally shot the man.
The male dropped the gun, then picked it up again and fell to the ground a short distance away, Camden said.
Paramedics initially took the wounded teen to Stroger Hospital, according to fire department officials. Police said he died at the hospital.
Officers recovered a semi-automatic handgun from the man at the scene, Camden said.
Area Central detectives and the Independent Police Review Authority, which investigates all police-involved shootings, is investigating.
