Three injured in fire engine and pickup crash on slick road

Three people were injured when a city fire truck and pickup crashed Tuesday on an snow covered South Side street, officials said. Police say the pickup driver was traveling too fast for conditions when her vehicle slid into the fire engine at the intersection of 51st and South Union streets, about a block from Engine 50’s house. The fire engine was headed south at 11:30 a.m. on Union with its lights and sirens on, and it had the green light, officials said. At the same time, a 1994 Chevrolet pickup heading west on 51st was sliding through the intersection after the woman driving lost control. The pickup struck the left rear tire of the fire truck and sustained some front-end damage, officials said. The pickup driver and a male passenger were taken to Stroger Hospital, while the driver of the fire truck was taken to Rush University Medical Center for observation. All three were in serious to fair condition, according to Fire Media Affairs. Four other firefighters on the truck were uninjured, officials said. The pickup driver was expected to be issued citations for driving too fast for conditions, officials said.
