Drew Peterson in third prison: ‘Menard is a tough place,’ lawyer says

Convicted wife murderer Drew Peterson landed in a new prison Thursday, the third time he’s been transferred in the last week.
Peterson, 59, was taken to the Menard Correctional Center, a maximum-security facility near the banks of the Mississippi River in southern Illinois. The prison is on lockdown following an assault on staff members earlier this month.
Peterson previously made stops in Stateville and Pontiac prisons since he was sentenced Feb. 21 to 38 years behind bars for the 2004 murder of his third wife, Kathleen Savio.
A spokeswoman for the Illinois Department of Corrections would not say why Peterson was transferred twice in so short a time.
Peterson’s attorney Joe Lopez could not explain the shuffle either, saying the state corrections department “marches to its own rules.”
“Menard is a tough place,” Lopez said.
It’s unclear whether Peterson’s background as a former cop was behind the moves.
Peterson is regarded by fellow inmates not as a former cop, but as “a victim of the system,” Lopez said.
