Three Schaumburg cops accused of stealing illegal drugs seized during arrests have resigned, village officials announced Wednesday — a day before the trio will be arraigned on drug conspiracy charges.
Schaumburg officials already had launched an internal investigation after tactical officers Terrance O’Brien, John Cichy and Matthew Hudak were arrested Jan. 16 by DuPage County and federal authorities.
“The fact that these three individuals are no longer members of the Schaumburg Police Department is good news for our residents and for the honest, law abiding officers that are working in our community every day,” Village Manager Ken Fritz said in a statement.
Cichy and O’Brien resigned Tuesday, while Hudak resigned last week, Fritz said. All had been placed on leave following their arrests.
Despite the resignations, Schaumburg officials plan to continue their investigation to “gather as much information as possible about the actions of these former police officers,” Fritz said.
The three are accused of skimming cocaine and marijuana confiscated during arrests, then reselling the drugs through a street dealer.
All three remain jailed in DuPage County in advance of their Thursday arraignment.
