Off-duty cop shoots at SUV after driver tries to hit him

An off-duty Chicago Police officer fired shots at an SUV after the driver tried to run him over after rear-ended his car about 10 p.m. Saturday in 800 block of West Division, police said.

The officer was stopped at a red light when the SUV struck his car, according to a statement from police News Affairs.

After getting out of his car, the officer told the SUV driver that he was a cop and that he should follow him to a nearby police station to fill out some paperwork, the statement said.

Instead, the driver hit the gas pedal and drove off, police said.

The officer called 911 and followed the SUV, which was traveling south in an alley just east of Ashland, the statement said.

The officer drove to the other end of the alley and blocked the alley so the SUV could not pass, the statement said. The officer got out of his car and told the driver to park his SUV, but the driver “accelerated toward the officer,” the statement said.

Fearing for his safety, the officer took out his gun and opened fire at the SUV, which shifted into reverse and hit several parked vehicles, the statement said.

The driver ran from the SUV and officers chased him down and cuffed him. Charges were pending Sunday night.
