Whenever we have asked Cook County Assessor Joseph Berrios about all those relatives he puts on his payroll, he has shrugged and said he should get points for hiding nothing.
Maybe it’s time Berrios came up with a new dodge. In Sunday’s Sun-Times, reporter Dan Mihalopoulos documented 13 members of the Berrios clan — like a football team complete with kicker — who are on state or county payrolls and two more who recently retired and are drawing public pensions.
Funny, we don’t remember Berrios, who also is chairman of the county Democratic Party, mentioning all those family insiders when asked about the most obvious two — the son and sister on his own payroll. Those two hires got him in trouble with the county ethics board.
We know we write a lot about Berrios and his penchant for, shall we say, putting kin in the game.
But we’ll stop when he stops.
