Cyclist, 81, killed in crash on Northwest Side

An 81-year-old cyclist was killed Wednesday when he swerved into a car on the Northwest Side.

Robert Vanpelt was riding his bicycle westbound on a center median in the 5100 block of Devon when he swerved into a car around 10:40 a.m., according to police and the medical examiner’s office.

He was thrown off his bicycle, leaving him with severe head injuries, police News Officer Veejay Zala said.

Vanpelt, of the 6300 block of North Hiawatha, was pronounced dead at 12:05 p.m at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, according to the medical examiner’s office.

Police do not expect to issue any citations in connection with the crash, Zala said.
