At least one person was killed Wednesday night when a Metra train and a car collided in Mokena, officials said.
The accident occurred about 9:45 p.m. at the grade-level crossing on 191st Street a few blocks west of LaGrange Road, according to Metra spokesman Tom Miller.
An inbound train from Joliet and a 1999 four-door Nissan collided, Miller said. The cause of the accident was under investigation.
Samira J. Baker, 19, of Mokena was pronounced dead at the scene at 12:05 a.m., according to the Will County Coroner’s office.
It was not immediately known whether there were other fatalities or injuries, Miller said. Mokena police also declined to provide further information pending completion of their report.
Traffic was being re-routed until at least 11:30 p.m., and police and members of the Mokena Emergency Services and Disaster Agency still were on the scene as of 1 a.m.
