An Oakbrook Terrace man was killed and a state trooper was injured when a drunk driver struck the Illinois State Police car they were sitting in on the Eisenhower Expy. in west suburban Addison early Saturday, police said.
Killed was Frank S. Caruso, 42, who was keeping warm in the back seat of the trooper’s marked car after he was involved in an accident on eastbound Interstate 290 near Mill Road about 1:22 a.m.
A 2010 Chevrolet Impala slammed into the back of the state police car, Illinois State Police spokeswoman Maria Navarro said.
The driver of the Impala, Daniel Clark, 32 of Chicago’s Lakeview neighborhood, was ordered held on a $1 million bond in DuPage County Court on Sunday. He was charged with one count of aggravated DUI involving death and one count of aggravated DUI involving great bodily harm, according to the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s office.
The trooper had his emergency lights on and positioned his vehicle to block the left two lanes of traffic.
Caruso was taken to Elmhurst Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 2:15 a.m., state police said. He died from his injuries, Navarro said.
According to Illinois State Police Elgin District Master Sgt. Bart Lamb, the trooper was taken to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood with a possible concussion. Clark was taken to Alexian Brothers Medical Center in Elk Grove Village, where he was treated and released.
