WASHINGTON — Cubs closer Carlos Marmol didn’t blame his costly wild pitch in the 10th inning on having to rush into the game because of an injury, which he never had done before. Marcos Mateo left with an elbow injury after facing two batters.

But manager Mike Quade wonders if there might be a better way to prepare a reliever if the situation arises again.

‘‘These guys’ routine is to get ready in the bullpen and then come out and make their eight [warmup] pitches and pitch,’’ Quade said. ‘‘But [in cases of injuries], everyone always comes out and makes their pitches on the mound in front of 30,000 people. Do you have to do that? Someone told me today it’s a courtesy.

‘‘Well, if a guy’s more comfortable doing his thing [in the bullpen], I’d rather have him [do that] because of the urgency once you get on the mound and everybody’s watching.’’

Said Marmol: ‘‘It’s tough to change your routine. . . . But I don’t think [a change is needed].’’

Roller-coaster Casey

Rookie Casey Coleman didn’t get the victory Monday, but he got a little redemption, pitching into the sixth inning with the lead after an emergency call-up to replace Ryan Dempster.

Coleman allowed two runs (one earned) and three hits in the first inning, which started with an error on first baseman Carlos Pena. Coleman allowed only two more hits, retiring 11 of 12 after the final hit in the first.

‘‘He was a bulldog,’’ center fielder Marlon Byrd said. ‘‘He could have started thinking about his last couple outings up here, but he went out and put up zeroes. That’s the Casey that we all know.’’

Coleman (2-4, 7.23 ERA), who fell short of expectations in two previous call-ups, knew this could be a brief one.

‘‘I’ll do whatever they ask. All I focused on was today,’’ he said. ‘‘And I’ll be the first one to admit I needed to go down and get back into starting form. We worked on some things and changed a few things mechanically and got back to throwing strikes.

‘‘I’m trying to contribute any way I can to this team, but at the same time when they send me down, I go down there with a positive attitude and know I need to get better and not feel sorry for myself.’’

After entering with a runner on third and one out, Jeff Samardzija gave up a squibbed grounder to first that drove in the run, his first of eight inherited runners to score this season.
