Two people were injured, one critically, in a crash early Sunday in the North Side Lincoln Park neighborhood.
The crash happened about 3:14 a.m. in the 2800 block of North Damen Avenue, police News Affairs Officer John Mirabelli said.
A woman driving a 2004 Chrysler Sebring crossed through the North Damen Avenue and West Diversey Parkway intersection, colliding with a 2009 Mazda LX; both vehicles spun out of control. A witness told police the Chrysler went through a red light, police said.
The Chrysler struck a wrought-iron fence and trees before hitting the stairs of a residential building, Mirabelli said. The Mazda flipped onto its right side, causing the car to split open and the engine to land across the street.
The 28-year-old driver of the Chrysler was taken in critical condition to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, Mirabelli said. The 35-year-old man, the only occupant of Mazda, was taken in “stable” condition with non-life threatening injuries to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County.
The cause of the crash is under investigation, but authorities believe speed was a factor.
