Suspect in lakefront attack held on $750,000 bail
A registered sex offender was ordered held in lieu of $750,000 bail Friday for allegedly attacking a woman running along the lakefront on the South Side earlier this week.
The 36-year-old victim was jogging southbound on the bike trail in the 6400 block of South Promontory Drive on Wednesday afternoon when Brandon Williams, whom the woman saw seconds earlier, grabbed her from behind, assistant Cook County state’s attorney Joell Zahr said.
The Calumet Park man touched the woman’s breast over her clothing before tackling her to the ground face-forward, Zahr said.
When the woman turned around, Williams, 24, allegedly pushed her down on her back again and pulled her sweater up as she tried to fight him off.
The woman was able to get away but Williams grabbed her again in an apparent attempt to take her in an area below the running track, Zahr said.
Again, the woman freed herself. She then proceeded to run toward Lake Shore Drive, screaming for help, Zahr said.
A witness who saw the alleged attack stopped his car and chased Williams before detaining him. Two other motorists also stopped to help hold Williams down until police arrived, authorities said.
Williams was sentenced to two years in prison in 2009 for masturbating behind another student at the Palos Hills-based Moraine Valley Community College, Zahr said.
In addition to taking classes at Moraine Valley, Williams also has taken courses at South Suburban College, a defense attorney said.
