A parolee released from prison on Saturday has been charged with killing his 90-year-old grandmother on Sunday in her southwest suburban home.

Darrel C. Agerton, 38, is charged with first-degree murder for the death of his grandmother, Veronica R. Schick, according to a statement from the Will County Sheriff’s office.

Deputies responded about 7:30 p.m. Sunday to Schick’s home in the 100 block of Jessie Street in unincorportated Joliet Township, where they found the elderly woman unresponsive, the sheriff’s office said.

Agerton was paroled Saturday from the Downstate Jacksonville Correctional Center, where he was serving time for a an aggravated DUI conviction, according to the Illinois Department of Corrections.

Agerton, who was living with his grandmother after being released, told deputies he woke from a nap and found her unresponsive on the floor, then called 911, the sheriff’s office said.

But based on statements he made to detectives and physical evidence found at the scene, police say he murdered Schick, the sheriff’s office said. The sheriff’s office could not be reached for comment on the cause of death Wednesday night.

Bond was set at $5 million on Wednesday and Agerton will be back in court Thursday.
