A 52-year-old man allegedly threw a propane tank and fire extinguisher at police officers from the eighth-floor balcony of his Streeterville apartment Tuesday night, police said.
Police officers responded to a call of a disturbance in the 200 block of East Illinois Street about 9:37 p.m., police News Affairs Officer Robert Perez said, adding that officers found the man tossing items from a balcony.
The man, who is an attorney and has a history of mental illness, was playing loud music, banging on window frames with metal pipes and throwing papers out of the window, said Near North District Lt. Joe Schmit. Police were called and after officers arrived, the man threw the tank and the extinguisher at them. The officers were not injured.
Officers did not see the man throw the propane tank, a police source said, but police found evidence implicating the man. Police said the launched items did not cause any damage.
The man was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital for psychological evaluation, Perez said. He has not been charged and police are not naming the man.
