In conjunction with both the upcoming election and its powerhouse production of “Good People” (David Lindsay-Abaire’s play about the working poor and much more), Steppenwolf Theatre will present a Public Square event, “Making Money: From the Black Market to the Board Room,” at 7 p.m. Nov. 4 on the Steppenwolf mainstage, 1650 N. Halsted.
Featured will be Columbia University professor Sudhir Venkatesh, the award-winning author (“Gang Leader for a Day,” “Off the Books: the Underground Economy of the Urban Poor” and “American Project: the Rise and Fall of a Modern Ghetto”), and a contributor to “Freakonomics” in conversation with Steppenwolf artistic director Martha Lavey.
Among the questions to be dealt with in this meditation on the relationship between class, privilege and success are: What does it take to make it to the top? Hard work? Pure luck? A trust fund?
