A 32-year-old Gary man was charged Monday with involutary manslaughter for allegedly playing around with a handgun and firing a shot that killed a Chicago man.

Jamalh Nelson, of the 3900 block of Maryland Street, was arrested by the Fugitive Apprehension Section and Great Lakes Regional Task Force.

Last November, Dewitt Wright was in bed on the first floor of a building in the 600 block of West 60th when a bullet fired from a handgun on the second floor went through the floor, striking him in the shoulder. Wright, 62, died of his wounds on April 12 at Loretto Hospital, according to the medical examiner’s office.

Police say Nelson was apparently playing around with a handgun on the second floor of the building when he fired the shot into the floor that struck Wright.

Nelson also was charged with one count of unlawful use of a weapon by a felon, police said. He is expected to appear in court at 26th and California for a bond hearing Wednesday.
