Two men suspected in a Southwest Side robbery were fleeing from police at a high speed when they allegedly caused a three-vehicle crash on I-57 near Markham that left seven people injured Thursday.

Chicago Police responded just after 1 p.m. to a robbery near South Western Avenue and West 117th Street, News Affairs Officer John Mirabelli said. Officers saw the suspect’s vehicle a short distance away and attempted a traffic stop.

Instead, the suspects sped off and eventually got on I-57, where Chicago Police ended their pursuit, Mirabelli said.

About 1:15 p.m., the suspects crashed on I-57 around 159th Street near Markham, Mirabelli said. The crash happened in the southbound lanes of I-57, according to Illinois State Police.

State Police said seven people were injured in the crash, including two with potentially life-threatening injuries who were airlifted from the scene. The other five were taken to hospitals and are expected to survive.

At least one of the vehicles involved rolled over, according to State Police.

Chicago Police said the robbery suspects are in custody at a hospital, but their conditions were not known.
