Ron Coomer, who played for the Cubs in 2001, will be named the team’s new radio analyst Friday, a source said.

Coomer will succeed Keith Moreland, who resigned last month after three years working beside play-by-play voice Pat Hughes on WGN-AM. Coomer was a finalist with another former Cub, Todd Hollandsworth.

Coomer, 47, attended Lockport High School. He played six of his nine seasons with the Minnesota Twins and has been an analyst and occasional color commentator for Fox Sports North covering the Twins. Coomer also has a sports-talk show on KTWN-FM in Minneapolis, the flagship station for the Twins.

Moreland resigned last month after three years on the job. He replaced the late Ron Santo after Santo’s death in December 2010.
