WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama hadn’t even finished his joke, and Blackhawks goalie Corey Crawford already was struggling — and failing — to hide his embarrassment as he tried to stand stoically in the back row of the risers.
‘‘We were originally going to let Corey Crawford say a few words today, but we thought we’d keep this family event family-friendly,’’ Obama said to big laughs at the White House ceremony Monday to celebrate the Hawks’ Stanley Cup championship. ‘‘You guys have been hanging out with [Mayor] Rahm Emanuel too much.’’
Crawford, of course, delivered the most famous speech of the Hawks’ post-parade rally in Grant Park: ‘‘[Expletive] right, Chicago! Woo! Biggest bunch of beauties in the league, [expletive] worked their nuts off for this trophy! Woo! No one will ever take this away from us! We’re the champs!’’
While Crawford cringed and smiled sheepishly, the Hawks laughed as loudly as anyone else in the room.
‘‘I thought [Obama] hit it right out of the park on that one,’’ coach Joel Quenneville said. ‘‘Corey had a fun day that day, and we all did. It was pretty funny.’’
It’s something Crawford has tried to lived down, and having the president make a crack about it surely won’t help.
‘‘We were laughing about that,’’ winger Patrick Kane said afterward. ‘‘That joke never seems to get old. Always kind of gets a rise out of Crow, so it was pretty funny.’’
Added captain Jonathan Toews: ‘‘I guess it shouldn’t be unexpected at this point. That’s the easy joke to make. I think he had everyone in stitches there after that one. Just being around the president, I think he’s an amazing person. The way he speaks, he’s got everyone’s attention. He’s got that sense of humor that he’s not afraid to go to places like that, either.’’
