When Kim and Kanye welcomed baby North West into the Kardashian clan, fans of their reality television show eagerly awaited news and photos of the new baby.

However, amid the happy baby news, celebrity magazines have reported that Kanye has been distant and removed since the birth of North, leaving Kim to grapple with the reality of raising an infant on her own (albeit with a large staff and family and friends).

Whether you keep up with the Kardashians or not, this scenario sounds more realistic and relatable than Kim’s usual quandaries. Many parents struggle to connect with one another following the birth of a baby. Even though it’s often the happiest time in a couple’s life, it also can be the most stressful and most challenging. Lack of sleep, stress over the baby’s well-being, breastfeeding woes and pain recovering from labor or a C-section can all greatly complicate the lives of new parents.

No wonder new parents can find it hard to relate to one another as lovers. Mom might feel like a stranger in her own body while Dad might be afraid to touch her, even after they get the green light from the doctor to enjoy intercourse once again.

My advice? Start slow. Find other ways to be bonded and affectionate if you aren’t ready to be intimate, such as by taking a warm bath together. Spend time away from the baby together, even if it’s just for a cup of coffee or a walk around the block.

Remember, this is just a phase in your relationship — your desire and your passion will return, as long as you stay committed and connected. That’s a reality worth working for, right?
