More in store for shoppers, plane buffs

October 11, 2009

If you think the Gulf Coast is all honky-tonks, golf and water sports, check out these alternatives:

•  Pensacola Naval Air Station, home of the Blue Angels and the National Naval Aviation Museum. A building’s worth of warplanes — Wildcats, Corsairs, F-14 Tomcats and experimental aircraft — is a must-see for any aviation buff. There’s even a Japanese Zero, complete with bullet holes, plus plenty of sawed-off cockpits for kids to climb into and fiddle with knobs and throttles. Best of all, the museum is free.

•  Mobile Bay is home to the U.S. Alabama, BB-60, a battleship that saw extensive action in the Pacific in World War II. Mobile Bay also is where Admiral David Farragut gave the order in 1864, “Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead.”

•  Non-golfing spouses who prefer the sport of shopping can spend their time and money at the 120 designer-label stores at Tanger Outlets in Foley, Ala.
