Cougars and prey to prowl the high seas

It’s anchors aweigh for the first International Cougar Cruise

September 2, 2009

Call it the Love Boat for cougars on the prowl.

Carnival’s ship Elation will set sail Dec. 4-7 on what’s being billed as the first International Cougar Cruise, aimed at all you aspiring Demi/Ashtons out there.

Women of a certain age and the “cubs” they prey on will begin and end their flirty floating vacation in San Diego, with a stop in Ensenada, Mexico.

“It’s going to be a really fun, affordable weekend,” said Ann Thomas, director of the Singles Travel Co., which runs 30 trips a year for those without significant others. Thomas’ company is co-sponsoring the cruise along with the Society of Single Professionals.

Cruise prices start at $125 a person, double occupancy, plus port charges and government fees. The price is twice that for solos wanting their own cabin. Passengers can request a roommate.

Cougars are a hot topic these days, what with Courteney Cox starring in ABC’s new series “Cougar Town” and TV Land’s reality dating show “The Cougar.”

Just last week, Gloria Navarro, 42, of Redwood Shores, Calif., was crowned the first Miss Cougar America at the National Single Cougars Convention in Palo Alto, Calif. She’ll be the guest of honor on the upcoming cruise.

Valerie Gibson, author of Cougar: A Guide for Older Women Dating Younger Men (Firefly Books, $12.95), defines a cougar as a “single, older woman — confident, sophisticated, desirable and sexy. She knows exactly what she wants. What she doesn’t want is children, cohabitation or commitment.”

Most cougars are north of 40, but the cruise is open to Mrs. Robinsons and boy toys of all ages.

“Supposedly every American male is only attracted to nubile 20-year-olds found in the centerfolds of men’s magazines,” said Rich Gosse, author of eight books on finding love and chairman of the Society of Single Professionals, co-sponsor of the trip. “The truth is that there are millions of American men who find older women attractive, and we will prove it on the cougar cruise.”

Cougars and cubs will share the roughly 2,000-passenger ship with regular cruise guests, but they will have their own cocktail parties, dinners and activities.
