Going 'Green' in Houston

March 26, 2008

The Beer Can House isn't the only new attraction in Houston.

A 12-acre urban park called Discovery Green officially opens April 13 in downtown Houston, across from the George R. Brown Convention Center and near several of this sports-crazed town's stadiums, including Minute Maid Park.

This new playground -- a petite version of our Millennium Park -- is a gem of greenspace in a city that already boasts more acres of parkland than any other major U.S. city. It's a $122 million project that features public art, a lake for model boating, an amphitheater for live performances, a children's playground and fountains to help you cool off from the humid Houston heat. Some 75 art, cultural and community events are scheduled this spring and summer (www.discoverygreen.com).

The park also has what's poised to be one of the best restaurants in town. The Grove is a sleek, comfortably upscale eatery serving fantastic steak, seafood and rotisserie specialties created by James Beard Award-winning chef Robert Del Grande of Houston's Cafe Annie fame.

I've never been a fan of deviled eggs -- until I had them at the Grove. The duck meatballs and tempura shrimp appetizers also were delish. Even if you're not hungry, it's worth dropping by for a drink. It's an architecturally beautiful space, with an all-glass exterior overlooking the park. Www.the grovehouston.com; (713) 337-7321.
