The California town of Coarsegold, near Yosemite’s south entrance, celebrates its eight-legged denizens Oct. 24 with the 11th annual Tarantula Festival. Among the fun: a “scream off,” where people compete to unleash the most blood-curdling scream. You’ll also find tarantula races and a hairiest leg contest — with men and women’s categories.
