Share local flavor with Chicago visitors
Travelers know that no guidebook is a substitute for the kind of insider knowledge you can only get from locals.
Well, Chicago locals, here's a chance to share your insight on our fair city with visitors.
The Chicago Office of Tourism is looking for new volunteers to join the "Chicago Greeter" program, a free tour service that pairs residents with out-of-towners.
Basic training for greeters is provided; the only requirement is a passion for Chicago and the ability to take visitors on at least six tours a year.
Greeters who speak German, Mandarin Chinese, Spanish and other foreign languages are in especially high demand, as are people familiar with Bronzeville and African-American history in Chicago. Same goes for folks with knowledge about South Side neighborhoods, such as Bridgeport, Morgan Park, Hyde Park and Beverly.
Since the program started in 2002, city greeters have given tours and talks to more than 7,000 visitors from at least 75 countries.
Apply to become a Chicago Greeter at www.chicagogreeter.com/ apply. New Greeter interviews and training will take place through spring 2009.
To request a Chicago Greeter visit, register at least 10 days in advance at www.chicagogreeter.com.
