Spring breaks on tight budgets

November 12, 2008

A survey of college students shows three-fourths are planning a spring break vacation next year, but about half are budgeting $500 or less for their trip, according to STA Travel, a student travel organization.

Two-thirds of those who responded plan to visit Mexico, the Caribbean or a beach in the United States.

The most popular U. S. beach destinations were South Padre Island in Texas (24 percent) and Panama City, Fla., at 22 percent. Miami was also high on students' lists. In Mexico, Cancun was the top choice, chosen by 55 percent, followed by Cabo and Acapulco at 16 percent each.

In the Caribbean, the top choice was the Bahamas.
