A new trail in northern Israel gives visitors the chance to walk — or bike, or ride a horse — in the footsteps of Jesus.
The 39-mile Gospel Trail, officially opened in December after several years of planning, traces the path of Jesus after he left Nazareth at the age of 30.
The largely government-funded trail starts outside of Nazareth at Mount Precipice, where a mob nearly threw Jesus off a cliff after a sermon he made in a local synagogue.
The path heads northeast past major sites in Jesus’ life, such as Tabgha, where the Church of the Multiplication of Loaves and Fishes commemorates when Jesus fed many with only a handful of food. Travelers pass by the Mount of Beatitudes before the trail terminates in Capernaum on the Sea of Galilee, where Jesus is said to have walked on water.
The trail is dotted with gas stations, farm towns and guest houses. Tourism officials are hoping it will spark entrepreneurs to open more hotels and restaurants along the way.
