Cardinal Francis George will make his first public appearance Friday since announcing last week that cancer was found in his kidney and liver.

George will attend, as scheduled, the “Noche de Gala” annual Hispanic Ministry Awards Banquet at Drury Lane in Oakbrook Terrace, the archdiocese said in a statement Thursday.

Joining George will be Archbishop Gustavo Garcia-Siller of San Antonio, who was a former Chicago auxiliary bishop. The sold-out event also is celebrating George’s 15th anniversary as Archbishop of Chicago. George will hold a media briefing prior to the banquet.
