What’s the right way to give a dog eye drops?

Updated: December 18, 2012 10:06AM

Q. How do you give a dog eye drops? My son’s dog is supposed to get eye drops three times a day but the dog won’t be still, even with both of us holding him, long enough for us to give them to him.

It is so frustrating. Please advise.

A. Dispensing necessary medications to a dog can be very frustrating. For eye drops, there’s a “wiki” showing step-by-step drawings about how to do it, www.wikihow.com/Give-Your-Dog-Eye-Drops.

Still, nothing will work perfectly because the dog is a living creature and adverse to human meddling. If you and your son develop a tag team method for giving those eye drops, stick with it.

The right way is the best way to dispense the drops with as little drama as possible.

Q. I just read your response to a reader’s question about a man with an aggressive dog. You said that dogs usually reflect their owners and I found this misleading at best and irresponsible at worst.

I have been an Akita owner for 16 years, first with an AKC Akita I had for 15 years and more recently as the proud owner of two rescue Akitas.

Both my wife and I are responsible citizens, not prone to getting into physical altercations; I’d say overall we are pretty mellow/boring people.

Nevertheless, my first Akita and one of the two rescues is very aggressive towards other dogs. A more helpful response would have been an explanation of some causes of dog aggression and suggested solutions.

A. The reasons for dog aggression are many and varied. Yet, the people who own the dogs are instrumental in determining a dog’s behavior.

Personal chaos breeds canine chaos. The best canine behavior training in the world might not be able to restrain your dog-aggressive Akitas from going after other dogs.

Only you have the power to keep everybody safe.
