When I look for quotes about mothers, I am always overwhelmed by their plenty. Unfortunately, complimentary quotes about fathers are not as evident or plentiful.

Determined to honor fathers with the compliments they deserve, I found these quotes: some honor specific fathers, others are more general. Shower the dads in your life with some of these quotes this Father’s Day.

Speaking of your dad:

♦ “It doesn’t matter who my father was; it matters who I remember he was.” — Anne Sexton

♦ “To become a father is not hard; to be a father is, however.” — Wilhelm Busch

♦ “Any man can be a father. It takes someone special to be a dad.” — Author Unknown

♦ “Sometimes the poorest man leaves his children the richest inheritance.” — Ruth E. Renkels

♦ “The child is father of the man.” — William Wordsworth

♦ “I cannot think of any need in childhood as strong as the need for a father’s protection.” — Sigmund Freud

♦ “It is a wise father that knows his own child.” — William Shakespeare

♦ “If the relationship of father to (child) could really be reduced to biology, the whole earth would blaze with the glory.” — James A. Baldwin

Speaking of my dad:

♦ “My father, he was like the rock, the guy you went to with every problem.” — Gwyneth Paltrow

♦ “I talk and talk and talk, and I haven’t taught people in fifty years what my father taught me by example in one week.” — Mario Cuomo

♦ “It is important not to copy other people’s careers but set the tone of who you want to be. My father always encouraged me to do that.” — Nicole Richie

♦ “My father used to play with my brother and me in the yard. Mother would come out and say, ‘You’re tearing up the grass.’ ‘We’re not raising grass,’ Dad would reply. ‘We’re raising boys.’” — Harmon Killebrew

♦ “My father said there were two kinds of people in the world: givers and takers. The takers may eat better, but the givers sleep better.” — Marlo Thomas

♦ “My father gave me the greatest gift anyone could give another person: he believed in me.” — Jim Valvano
