The fallout continues over the column about Diane, whose firefighter husband left her for a paramedic who worked at his firehouse.
She wondered if there are more women whose husbands had left them for female firefighters and paramedics.
“The Fire Department of the past — when everyone drank and partied in the firehouse — is alive and well.”
BILL: I’m a fourth-generation member of the Chicago Fire Department. I was a chief, with 46 years of service, and ended my career as president of our CFFU Local 2. It was an extreme pleasure to serve this city and its people.
Yes, we have some bums. So do other vocations. It would take days to Google all the media and religious bums. Maybe that’s a thought for your next embarrassing BS column.
You should be ashamed of yourself. Did you not watch the NATO fiasco and see the dedication of the men and women of the Chicago Fire Department and Chicago Police Department?
The CPD has had female officers for eons. And they’ve also had problems. Remember, they ride in a car for eight-hour shifts. Also remember that they, like the CFD, are human.
BARBARA: I felt sick as I read about the firehouse hanky-panky. I’m a victim of the same thing, but in the Chicago Police Department. Sleeping around is something “everybody does,” according to my ex-husband. I guess that was supposed to make me feel better. Well, it didn’t help me or my two children.
My ex-husband left behind a house, a wife and a family to be with his police whores. His friends covered for him, and Police Department leaders said it wasn’t their job to make sure he met his financial obligations.
My daughter married and has a wonderful husband and two beautiful children. Too bad he’ll never know them. We’re so much better off without him, but I lost out on the financial security that should have been mine after 21 years of marriage. It took me a while to be at peace with the whole situation, but I am no longer living with a liar, and that’s the greatest feeling in the world.
HAZEL: My guess is that there are far more male and female firefighters/EMTs who are not engaged in drunken partying on the public dime than those who are. There are unethical practitioners in just about every profession — schoolteachers who have sex with students, doctors who assault patients who are under anesthesia, etc. It certainly doesn’t mean that all or even most people in those professions are slime, and I think it’s unfair to characterize them that way.
BRANDON: How is a man cheating on his wife a newsworthy story? You have got to be kidding me. You and your editor have turned this newspaper into an episode of the “Maury” show. What’s next? An article on who’s my baby’s daddy? I am canceling my subscription.
JOE: I’m a 15-year member of the Chicago Fire Department. Can you honestly tell me there has never been an affair between two co-workers at the Chicago Sun-Times? You should be ashamed of yourself. I am canceling my subscription.
MIKE: I’m a member of the Chicago Fire Department and you’re a real piece of garbage.
