What does the average American man look like?
Pittsburgh artist Nickolay Lamm recently released 3-D images of the average American man, based on the most recent weight and height statistics from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. Lamm also made images of men from the Netherlands, France and Japan.
Using BMI data, Lamm created the American man with a 39-inch waist. He is 5’9” and has a body mass index of 29. (A BMI of 29 is considered overweight, and a BMI of 30 or above is obese).
In comparison to men from other countries, the American man is generally taller (except when compared to men from the Netherlands), but also tends to be a bit rounder with a thicker waist.
Our bodies continually evolve with each generation, and while American men are now heavier on average than past generations, that doesn’t mean that we are unhealthy as a nation. Eating healthy and exercising are becoming national obsessions that almost everyone is interested in. And that’s important not only for physical health, but for sexual health as well.
It’s also important to remember that women are no longer the only ones who are under a great deal of scrutiny when it comes to their weight and their bodies. Men stress about their appearance just like women do, and it’s good to keep that in mind when you are supporting your partner. Offer him compliments on his physique and let him know how sexy and strong you think he is. He will live on that boost of pride all day, and will channel that positive energy back to you as well.
