Tonight’s Halloween, and that means the annual angst by parents about what to do about all that candy.
Here’s my advice: Let them indulge a bit tonight. Then tell them they can have one piece a day. By next Thursday there’s a good chance they will have forgotten about it. In two weeks you’ll be tossing it (well, after pulling out a chocolate or two for yourself).
With our national concerns about childhood obesity, a lot of parents overthink Halloween. For the overwhelming majority of kids, the eating of candy isn’t why they love the holiday. For them the thrill is being in a costume, walking around as night falls with siblings and friends and getting candy.
Don’t think you’re “saving” your child by letting them eat the mini boxes of cereal or crackers that the self-righteous hand out. All you’re doing is trading one carbohyrate for another.
Limiting, not prohibiting, provides a good lesson in portion control. Give it a try tonight. —Sue Ontiveros
