In the fitness world, “bad form” doesn’t just refer to body position. We spoke with two experts on what you should and shouldn’t do when it comes to gym workouts.
Lois Miller, regional group fitness manager, Fitness Formula Clubs
» Get to class on time. Most regulars have their spot in every class. If you’re new, getting there early will help you navigate the real estate. Don’t hesitate to move up front.
» Wear appropriate clothing for each class. If you’re taking a pilates or yoga class don’t wear baggy shorts. Nobody wants to see your undies or too much skin.
» Bring water. Leaving the studio for water than returning is a distraction.
» Leave personal belongings in the locker room, especially cell phones.
» Follow the workout your instructor provides. If you want to do your own thing, group classes aren’t for you.
Tonya Dugger, area talent development and group fitness manager, Equinox
» Wipe up your sweat. No one likes your sweat on the machines or on the floor of a fitness studio.
» Are you an equipment hog? Using any piece of equipment and then checking your Facebook status between sets might be frustrating to another member. And this also includes use of the showers in the locker rooms, too.
» Pick up after yourself. It only takes a couple of minutes to put whatever you brought out to “play” with back. —Lisa Shames
