GAME GRUB | Stadiums go head to head with new menus

April 16, 2008

Cub and Sox fans might never relate when it comes to the win-loss records of their beloved teams, but they at least can find common ground in this: the two-foot-long sandwich.

Both ballparks have added mammoth sandwiches to their menus for the 2008 season.

At Wrigley Field, a two-foot-long Italian beef feeds two to four people and costs $18. Fans can find it at the Italian Hot Spot concession stand in the left field concourse.

Not to be outdone, U.S. Cellular Field is touting its $14 Doubleheader Dog, a 24-inch hot dog, as the first of its kind in the major leagues. It's sold in the club level Southside Grill.

Both stadiums take their food seriously. Chicago-based Levy Restaurants handles all food operations at Wrigley and premium foodservice for the Cell, which also contracts with Delaware North Companies SportService for its concessions.

They even have hopped on the locavore bandwagon, using Illinois and Michigan produce and artisan cheeses from Wisconsin and Michigan farms in their Stadium Club Chef's Harvest Tables.

Also new at Wrigley this season:

•   Tallgrass Beef hamburgers. The beef, named for Chicago broadcaster and rancher Bill Kurtis' company, is from grass-fed cattle and all the rage among eco-conscious restaurants. The burgers are part of the Chef's Harvest Table buffet in the Stadium Club.

•   "Throwback" menu. Available in the suites, the menu offers comfort foods such as meatloaf with mashed potatoes, fried chicken and watermelon slices.

New at the Cell:

•   Small plates. It's the dining trend that just won't die. The new club level concession stand offers appetizer portions of a dozen rotating items such as fried macaroni and cheese and mini-paninis. Three small plates are $7; five portions are $10.
