Michelin Guide reveals 64 Chicago restaurants for Bib Gourmand status

Michelin released its coveted list of Bib Gourmands exactly one week prior to the launch of the highly anticipated Michelin Guide Chicago 2013.

There were 64 restaurants selected across the Chicagoland area this year, with 19 newly added to the category.

Last year, there were 56 restaurants, and eleven off those didn’t make the cut this year.

The Bib Gourmand designations indicate quality restaurants that are affordable (less than $40 for two courses plus dessert).

Among those that made the list for the first time were Au Cheval, Balena, Jam, Maison, Pump Room, Slurping Turtle and Urban Union.

As for the ones that were cut from the list this year, there’s one positive note.

A restaurant cannot be a Bib Gourmand winner and a star recipient on the Michelin Guide at the same time. So now, those restaurants are eligible to get star designations, which will be announced Nov. 14 and are the gold standard for restaurants.

That’s good news for restaurants like Perennial Virant, whose chef Paul Virant competed on Iron Chef America.
