She wants a couch potato lap dog

Updated: January 4, 2012 1:41PM

Q . I would like to get a dog and could use some help choosing one. I am a 66-year-old single woman, recently retired. I have a fenced yard. The dog would be alone for a couple hours maybe three days a week. I would like a dog for companionship and security.

I have previously had two dogs — a shepherd-greyhound mix and a collie-husky mix. I like big hairy dogs but think those days are over. I would like a dog that is less active (a couch potato lap dog) and needs less grooming.

I will get a shelter or rescue dog.

A. Dog Lady opines you’re not afraid of keeping a dog’s dog — big hairy huskies, shepherd-mixes. And, really, every dog has its inner lap dog.

You are making a great start by looking at rescue and shelter dogs. Terrier-mixes are adorable and very dogged. Dog Lady is partial to the terrier group, with breeds that can be scary smart. But Dog Lady senses you’re not looking for smarts but for a straight-faced companion who won’t ask too much of you.

You can decide what works for you and what doesn’t; and Dog Lady can advise you until your brain busts with Fido facts. In the end, the only thing that matters is your reaction to a hairy mug and the hairy mug’s reaction to you.

Q. My 8-month-old Malti-poo has one ear that sits up and one down. Should they both be one way or the other?

A. Whenever Dog Lady gets questions about looks, she wonders: Does it matter? After all, you won’t be entering Malti-poo into the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show.

Check with a veterinarian, but dogs can hear intensely well whether their ears rise in a full salute or flop fetchingly.

Also, with puppies, ears can take awhile to stand up, sometimes a year or more. Remember that even if the errant ear never rights itself, your darling always will provide an earful of delights.
