Can a 9-year-old Cane Corso withstand long journey to new country?

Updated: November 27, 2011 12:34PM

Q. I rescued a Cane Corso in 2005. She is the joy of my life and we are rarely separated. I am considering retiring to another country next year. I believe she will have no difficulty accepting the warmer climate as it will be better for her arthritis and allergies. My concern is the actual trip — two flights of four hours each with a two-hour layover. I don’t want to stress my dog unnecessarily.

Is making this trip asking too much of a 9-year-old dog?

A. Wow, a Cane Corso is a whole lot of dog to ship in the cargo hold. Especially a Cane Corso with health issues. Riding in the belly of an airplane is complicated for pets. Many airlines now refuse to carry any snub-nosed breeds with breathing problems.

Your dog has allergies. Not sure how these impede her breathing, but you should definitely check out with your veterinarian.

Airlines are not irresponsible but the crates containing living creatures are treated like ordinary deadweight baggage. The airline companies’ primary concern is for the human cargo. Keep this in mind
as you decide, with your
vet, the best course for
your dog.

Q. My male corgi is about 1. We have a lot of problems with him barking. If my wife comes home he will bark at her for a good five minutes. He is well-house trained except when he is meeting someone new or when he’s anxious. He will piddle. This problem arises even when I’m just trying to put his leash on him. Are there any suggestions for solving either of these poor behaviors?

A. You have a herding dog. He’s just doing what comes naturally.

Keep all drama to a minimum. Your wife should not acknowledge the dog at all when he’s making a ruckus. Neither should visitors. And the leashing ritual should be a swift click off and on.
