The race for a cure took to the seas as the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society held its 16th annual Leukemia Cup Regatta Weekend. On Friday, more than 250 guests boarded the MV Abegweit, a restored 1940s ferry permanently moored at the Columbia Yacht Club, for a kick-off event featuring the classical sounds of the North Coast Orchestra. The evening concluded with a live and silent auction, which included a $1,000 shopping spree at Macy’s. “Most people have been touched by cancer and this is how the city’s sailors give back,” said event chairman Tracy Howard. The nautical weekend netted $350,000 to help fund blood-cancer research. — Katerina Bizios The Chicago Sun-Times was the media sponsor of this event.
