President Barack Obama might have given strategist David Axelrod the night off, but the campaigning didn’t stop last weekend when Axelrod’s wife Susan — along with her co-chair, former White House Chief of Staff Bill Daley — raised $1.1 million for Citizens United for Research in Epilepsy (CURE). Nearly 800 guests, including political heavyweights like Sen. Dick Durbin and Gov. Pat Quinn, attended the event in Navy Pier’s Grand Ballroom, which featured a performance by singer Carole King. “I was here for the sound check this afternoon and started crying,” said Susan Axelrod, who co-founded the non-profit in 1998. “I thought, ‘Wow, Carole King is here for epilepsy.’ We’re blessed.”
