After 31 years the annual Brookfield Zoo Whirl has literally earned its stripes: The tiger-themed “It’s a Wonderful Whirl” fundraiser attracted about 700 guests and raised more than $1.3 million. Guests interacted with live flamingos, penguins, foxes, porcupines and a cheetah in a wild-styled room featuring custom tiger lamp shades and a bar overgrown with rainforest foliage. Chaired by Susan Ahern, the event featured a highly anticipated live auction and paddle raise with the big-ticket item being the opportunity to name a baby aardvark. Funds benefit Chicago Zoological Society, which will use the proceeds to support the animals at Brookfield Zoo as well as the society’s conservational and educational outreach programs.
