Designer's Eye: Couple wants cozy room to relax with company
FAMILY ROOM | Couple needs a place to relax with company
Dear Designer Eye,
We want a usable/comfortable cozy look to enjoy relaxing for two of us or with company. There are many doors and windows in our 24-by-19-foot rectangular family room. Help!

Dear Judy,
This room is already a cozy living space. With some minor changes, some furniture elimination and a little reorganizing, it has the potential to feel more welcoming for you and your husband. Also, a great room to entertain!
Also, you should be able to use some of your existing furniture pieces; they look as if they are in great condition.
All my best,
Susan Patterson
1. TOO MUCH STUFF!
I eliminated much of your furniture pieces to expose a more open great-sized family room.
2. FRESHEN UP
Removing the colored carpet and stone entry to expose or replace with hardwood floors will create an updated fresh look. Warm colors can be added in the area rugs that I placed. Because this is a large room using an earth tone, such as a moss green, or a truffle colored tan will create a soothing space. Check out Benjamin Moore's new Affinity paint colors. They are soft and versatile.
3. HIDE THE TV
Using a wall unit for the television and storage is a more efficient use of the large wall space that you have. This way the television is not constantly exposed, it can be hidden when not in use.
4. FLANK THE FIREPLACE
You and your husband can spend the cozy time you are searching for by flanking the fireplace with two comfortable chairs and an ottoman to share.
5. EXTRA SEATING
A separate seating area with a large sofa and swivel chair provides a comfortable space for guests.
6. WINDOW TREATMENTS
Using 2-inch wood blinds on the windows and doors is a simple treatment that is perfect for a family room. It allows full or semi sunlight during the day and complete privacy at night. A fabric valance can be added to bump up the formality level, and add a dash more color.
