That BLT might cost you more, with bacon prices rising

That summertime delight, the BLT sandwich, is likely to cost more this year because bacon prices are up sharply.

Pork bellies — where bacon comes from — cost about 50 percent more than last year at this time.

“Until last year, we’d never seen pork-belly prices above $1,” said Robert Manly, vice president of Smithfield Foods .

Retail bacon prices are about 25 percent higher than last year because feed costs have increased, so hog producers aren’t increasing their herds.
