Dancing’s a great way to work out, and “Cardio Hip Hop Party” aims to prove it.

There are three different retro dance styles (“everything old is cool again”) included in the workouts, which are led by Jennifer Galardi, a Los Angeles-based dance and fitness instructor: Hip Hop/House, Old School and Video Jam. After a warmup of isolation moves that loosen up the body — particularly the waist and hips — one workout segues into the next.

The DVD also includes a guide that breaks down the key moves slowly and clearly. I skipped that initially and found the workout instruction easy enough to follow.

For many, the moves will bring back memories: the Roger Rabbit, Cabbage Patch, Old School Shuffle. If the moves are new to you, Galardi’s explanations make them easy to master. Each workout builds from a few simple steps, repeats them and adds on until you have a full routine. You’ll be dancing before you know it.

Galardi does the workouts with two others, one doing a modified version, the other showing steps to rev things up. That makes this easy-to-follow DVD an option for people at various skill levels.
