Curves is a great starting point for people new to the gym or working out — so it is a fitting place to try a fitness trend: Interval training.
Curves gyms across the country have paired up with celebrity trainer Jillian Michaels to design a workout that uses the principals of interval training to get you working hard. And if you’ve ever watched Michaels on “The Biggest Loser,” you know what you’re in for.
Alternating between Curves’ signature hydraulic machines and plyometrics every 30 seconds is the same as a regular workout at the gym chain, though this circuit is done while watching a video of Michaels as she describes a different cardio or weight-based strength move every minute. It’s a class, so expect to follow along with the video if you are there to exercise.
For 30 seconds between machines, you could do pushups, squats, jumping jacks, hold a plank and do lunges — all in one cycle around the Curves gym. You’ll repeat the cycle two times, for a total of 25 minutes.
In the video, Michaels demonstrates two versions of each move, one modified to be a little easier than the other. Try the harder version before the easier.
The new workout is designed to combat exercise plateaus in long-term Curves members, according to Curves Lincoln Square owner Victoria Duran. Because the machines do not change in weight, once you master the original Curves circuit it’s expected you’ll move on to the Jillian Michaels classes to maintain the intensity necessary to see results.
Videos will change on the first of every month and incorporate all new moves to ensure that your muscles don’t get too familiar with the work.
Though Curves is designed as a lower-impact gym, the Jillian Michaels’ workout is an opportunity to really work hard, burn fat and get stronger. Go prepared to meet the challenge.
