It is perhaps the second most famous umbrella in film history, next to that of Gene Kelly’s in “Singin’ in the Rain.” As indelible as Mary Poppins’ flying apparatus remains, the story of this “magical nanny” and her talking parrot-head umbrella is a beloved slice of American pop culture. Here are some other Poppins tidbits:
» This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Oscar-winning Disney film version of “Mary Poppins,” which starred Julie Andrews in the title role, with Dick Van Dyke as her chimney sweep sidekick Bert.
» Tom Hanks and Emma Thompson are starring in the new Disney feature film “Saving Mr. Banks” (opening Dec. 13). In the film, Thompson stars as “Poppins” author P.L. Travers and Hanks is Walt Disney, who spent nearly 20 years pursuing the film rights from Travers, finally winning her over in 1961.
